The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is participating in the 2019 Smithsonian Museum Day on Saturday, Sept. 21, and offering free admission for two guests with every Museum Day ticket downloaded from http://www.smithsonianmag.com.
The Smithsonian’s Museum Day is a nationwide one-day opportunity for the public to enjoy free admission to participating museums, and “an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine,” according to the preeminent museum’s website.
Beginning Thursday, August 15, tickets for IMS Museum free admission on Museum Day will be available for download at: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-2019/
Museum Day is the perfect time to visit the IMS Museum, as the 2019 featured exhibit, “Mario Andretti: ICON” presented by Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline, anchors the Museum’s attractions, but visitors will also experience two “mini-exhibits” honoring other titans of motorsports.
The Andretti Autosport NTT IndyCar Series team is owned by Mario Andretti’s son, Michael, and four of the team’s five Indianapolis 500-winning cars are on display: cars driven by Dan Wheldon (2005 winner), Dario Franchitti (2007), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014) and Alexander Rossi (2016).
Team Penske, owned by global business titan and 18-time Indianapolis 500-winning team owner Roger Penske, celebrated its 50th year at the “500” in 2019 and won its 500th race in major-league racing in September 2018. The exhibit, “Penske’s First 500,” at the IMS Museum celebrates these accomplishments with a combination of historic and contemporary IndyCars and NASCAR stock cars.
As always, the IMS also features numerous historic Indianapolis 500-winning cars and displays chronicling the illustrious history, pageantry and innovation borne at IMS. Family-friendly educational activities are also planned for the day.
